Tenth Sunday of Pentecost
Psalm 85:10 "Steadfast love and faithfulness will meet;
righteousness and peace will kiss each other."
Focus Scriptures:
1 Kings 19:9-18
Matthew 14:22-33

Matthew records that at the instructions of Jesus, the disciples sail across the Sea of Galilee when a storm comes upon them. At the fourth watch, Jesus comes walking on the water in the midst of the chaos that the disciples are experiencing. He identifies Himself, “Take heart it is I”, which could be interpreted as “I am”, the name of God (Exodus 3:14).  Matthew's account of this miracle records that Peter asks, and Jesus invites him to walk on the water in the midst of the chaos which he did. The trust that he displays in stepping out in the chaos is amazing.  However, the fury of the storm quickly undermines his trust in the Divine One who calls him, and so he begins to sink only to be rescued by Jesus. Jesus chastises him for his “little faith”. In 1 Kings 19: 9- 18, God calls Elijah to return to the place from where he came (place of danger) to do the three things that God calls him to do. Elijah obeys because he trusts in God. When we put our total trust in God we can go through any difficult and chaotic situation because we know that God is there to take us through and at the same time giving us the opportunity to  build greater trust in Him.
